Terre Blanche Le Chateau

Dave Thomas built Le Chateau in 2004 as the championship course of the Terre Blanche resort, a par 72 stretching to 7,234 yards through the oak and olive covered hills of inland Provence. Long a host of professional golf and the anchor of arguably the best golf resort in continental Europe, it pairs serious architecture with a setting that smells of pine and lavender.

The verdict

Terre Blanche sits in the hills behind the Cote d'Azur, 45 minutes from Cannes but a world away from the coast's crowds, and Le Chateau is the reason golfers make the drive. Dave Thomas, the Welsh architect behind The Belfry's Brabazon, used the property's natural movement boldly: fairways tumble through corridors of cork oak and olive, several tees launch from high ground with all of Provence beyond, and the par 72 stretches to 7,234 yards for those who want the full examination.

It is the complete resort course. Conditioning is tour standard year round, the GPS cart included in the fee takes the sting out of the hills, and the Albatros Golf Performance Center beside the range is among the best practice facilities in Europe. With the gentler sibling course Le Riou alongside and a five star hotel above the 18th, Le Chateau anchors the strongest golf resort in France and a natural flagship round on any Provence itinerary.

The holes worth the trip

Le Chateau opens from elevated ground, the first drives falling away into valleys of cork oak, and the early holes set the pattern: generous landing zones, but approaches that must carry ravines or hold greens benched into hillsides. Thomas moves the course through the property so the views keep changing, from the medieval village of Tourrettes on one skyline to the foothills of the Alps on another.

The par 3s carry much of the drama, several playing across natural ravines where the only miss is the green itself, and club selection swings two or three irons depending on the day's breeze. The par 5s are reachable risk and reward holes for the long hitter, each guarded by water or sand at exactly the distance a confident second wants to land.

The round closes hard. The final holes climb back toward the resort, demanding committed swings when the legs are tiring, and the 18th plays to a green set beneath the hotel terrace, one of the better closing amphitheaters in resort golf. Professional fields sharpened their games here for years, and the course still feels every inch a championship test from the back pegs.

Where to stay nearby

The obvious base is Terre Blanche itself, a five star resort of Provencal villas and suites scattered through the estate, with two courses, the performance center, four restaurants and a celebrated spa inside the gates. Staying on property earns preferred tee times and rates on Le Chateau and Le Riou, and the resort works as well for non playing partners as for the golf obsessed.

Beyond the estate, the hill villages of Fayence and Tourrettes are ten minutes away for a more local stay, and the Cote d'Azur hotels of Cannes and Nice put the beach and the airport within easy reach of a morning tee time. Many traveling golfers pair Terre Blanche with the Riviera's other marquee round at Sperone on Corsica, or head north to Paris for Le Golf National and Morfontaine.
