Golf in Costa Brava

Catalonia's wild coast holds Spain's number one course and future Ryder Cup host at Camiral, the oldest umbrella pine golf on the coast at Pals, Robert von Hagge's dune work at Emporda and a hilltop course with the whole coastline at its feet, most of it under 120 euro. Add medieval villages and the Girona food scene and the week builds itself. The courses that matter, the seasons, the costs and how to plan it.

Why golf on the Costa Brava

One course made this coast a destination and one announcement made it unmissable. The Stadium Course at Camiral, the resort formerly known as PGA Catalunya, has topped the Spanish rankings for years: a Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo design from 1999, cathedral pines, tilted fairways, lake guarded greens and one of Europe's great sets of par 3s. From 2031 it will host the Ryder Cup, and the 2026 season already shows it, with the Stadium scheduled to close from 27 July to 27 September for improvement works ahead of the build up. Play it now, in spring or autumn, while a tee time still costs 195 to 260 euro.

The rest of the coast is the value half of the bargain. Golf de Pals, Fred Hawtree's 1966 original through the umbrella pines behind Platja de Pals, publishes around 116 euro with midweek rates near 86. Next door, Emporda's Links course, Robert von Hagge's rumpled dunes golf behind the Gulf of Roses, and its quieter Forest sibling run 80 to 115. Golf d'Aro hangs 300 meters above the sea with the whole coastline below, and Peralada adds golf to a wine resort near Figueres. Stay in a medieval village, eat in Girona, and the trip outplays coasts with twice the course count.

The regions

Girona and Camiral

The flagship corner: Camiral's two courses and five star hotel sit 15 minutes from Girona airport and 20 from the old city's food scene, Michelin stars included. Most trips start here, with the Stadium booked first and everything else arranged around it.

Pals and the Emporda

The coastal heart: Golf de Pals and the 36 holes at Emporda within minutes of each other, the medieval villages of Pals, Peratallada and Begur for the evenings, and the long beach at Platja de Pals between rounds. The best value 54 hole base in Spain.

The hills and wine country

South to Golf d'Aro on its 300 meter plateau above Platja d'Aro and the cork oak golf of Golf Costa Brava at Santa Cristina; north to Peralada's wine resort near Figueres and the Dali museum. The scenic margins that round out a week.

The courses that matter

Camiral, Stadium Course

Coles and Gallardo, 1999 · Spain's No 1 · 2031 Ryder Cup

The consensus best course in Spain and a future Ryder Cup stage: pines, tilted fairways and lake guarded greens that demand every club in the bag, with tournament conditioning all year. Indicative 195 to 260 euro in 2026, and closed 27 July to 27 September 2026 for improvement works, so book spring or autumn.

Camiral, Tour Course

Second course at Camiral · pine parkland

No warm up act: shorter and more forgiving than the Stadium but cut through the same forest with the same conditioning, and for many handicaps the more enjoyable day. The smart first round of a Camiral stay and the fallback during the Stadium's 2026 summer closure. Around 90 to 165 euro, often packaged with the resort.

Emporda, Links Course

Robert von Hagge, 1990 · Gulf of Roses

The most distinctive golf on the coast, nine pairs of holes through low dunes and salt pines that play closer to true links golf than anything else in Catalonia, with the gulf wind doing the defending. One of the best value serious rounds in Spain at 80 to 115 euro. Welcomes visitors.

Emporda, Forest Course

Robert von Hagge · inland nines

The Links' calmer sibling turns inland through centuries old pines, with the same bold von Hagge green movement and welcome shade in high summer. The shared clubhouse makes Emporda the easiest 36 hole day on the coast, in the same 80 to 115 euro band. Welcomes visitors.

Golf de Pals

Fred Hawtree, 1966 · Platja de Pals

The original Costa Brava course and still its most atmospheric, threaded through 60 year old corridors of umbrella pine behind the beach, with the 1972 Spanish Open in its history and sand based turf that drains all winter. Indicative 116 euro, midweek near 86, five minutes from the medieval village of Pals. Welcomes visitors.

Golf d'Aro, Mas Nou

Plateau course · 300 meters above Platja d'Aro

The view round: from its plateau the panorama runs from the Pyrenees to the sea, and the golf underneath is a genuine tumbling mountain parkland of doglegs and elevation changes. Early bird rates have run around 76 euro, which buys the best vista in Spanish golf. Welcomes visitors.

Golf Costa Brava

Santa Cristina d'Aro · cork oak parkland

The mature local club of the southern coast, rolling through cork oaks and pines near Santa Cristina d'Aro in the 70 to 110 euro band that makes this region's supporting cast such good value. A relaxed members' atmosphere and an easy add on from a Platja d'Aro or Sant Feliu base. Welcomes visitors.

Peralada Golf

Wine resort golf · near Figueres

Golf in the Alt Emporda wine country, attached to the Peralada resort with its castle, winery and spa, and an easy pairing with the Dali museum in Figueres. Roughly 70 to 110 euro, and the natural northern night of a full Costa Brava circuit. Welcomes visitors.

Getting there and around

Girona airport is the cheat code: 15 minutes from Camiral, 40 from the Pals coast, with low cost connections across Europe. Barcelona's intercontinental hub is an hour and a quarter down the AP-7 for long haul arrivals, and the high speed train links Barcelona to Girona in 38 minutes. Once there the region is compact, Camiral to Pals is 45 minutes, Pals to Peralada under an hour, and the coast road through Begur and the calas is the most beautiful detour in Spanish golf. A car is essential and the driving is easy outside August.

Where to stay

For the flagship leg, stay at Camiral itself, the five star hotel beside the first tee with Girona's restaurants 20 minutes away. On the coast, base in or around Pals, small hotels in the medieval village, the beach at Platja de Pals, both golf complexes inside ten minutes, or in Begur for the prettiest evenings on the coast. Peralada's castle and wine resort makes the northern night, and groups wanting beach resort energy choose Platja d'Aro with Golf d'Aro on the hill above.

Costa Brava golf questions

What is the best golf course on the Costa Brava?

The Stadium Course at Camiral, formerly PGA Catalunya, a Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo design from 1999 that tops the Spanish rankings year after year, has hosted the Spanish Open and will host the 2031 Ryder Cup. Indicative 2026 fees run 195 to 260 euro, and the course is scheduled to close from 27 July to 27 September 2026 for improvement works, so book spring or autumn and confirm dates with the resort.

How much does golf cost on the Costa Brava in 2026?

Roughly 70 to 260 euro. Camiral's Stadium Course is the ceiling at 195 to 260 euro, its Tour Course runs about 90 to 165, the Pals classics, Golf de Pals and the two Emporda courses, sit around 80 to 116 with midweek rates near 86 at Pals, and the hilltop and local courses, Golf d'Aro, Golf Costa Brava and Peralada, run roughly 70 to 110. Always confirm directly before booking.

When is the best time to play golf on the Costa Brava?

Spring and autumn, roughly March to June and September to November, bring warm settled weather, the best conditions and the premium rates. High summer is hot and busy with beach traffic, though twilight golf works well. Winters are mild enough for year round play at lower fees. In 2026 the one date that matters is Camiral's Stadium closure from 27 July to 27 September, so a flagship trip belongs in spring or late autumn.

Is the Costa Brava better than the Costa del Sol for golf?

Different trips. The Costa del Sol has more courses and a longer winter season; the Costa Brava has Spain's number one course at Camiral, better value in its supporting cast, the medieval villages of the Emporda, the Girona food scene and far quieter roads. For a quality over quantity week built around one world class venue, the Costa Brava is the stronger argument. Both are easy arrivals, Girona for the north, Malaga for the south.
